Doctoral scholarship
The annual PhD scholarship amount is €19,021.08, gross of social security contributions payable by the recipient under current legislation.
The scholarship is paid in monthly instalments. For Round XLII, the first instalment for November 2026 will be paid together with the December 2026 instalment.
The scholarship is awarded for one year and is renewed subject to the successful completion of the activities required for the previous year, according to the University regulations.
Scholarship increase for research stays abroad
The amount of the PhD scholarship may be increased by up to 50% for periods of actual stay abroad, in accordance with the University regulations on PhD programs.
Research funds
In addition to the scholarship, each PhD candidate is entitled to funds for research activities in Italy and abroad. These funds are no less than 10% of the scholarship amount and are used according to University procedures, subject to authorization by the PhD Program Coordinator.
University contribution
Students enrolled in the first year of a PhD program who receive a PhD scholarship are required to pay a fixed contribution of €1,000.00.
For Round XLII, this contribution is paid in two instalments:

The fixed contribution of €1,000.00 is not due for students enrolled in years following the first year.
Regional tax and stamp duty
All PhD students are required to pay the annual regional tax for the right to university study and the virtual stamp duty. For Round XLII, the total amount is €206.00, due at the time of enrolment or renewal of enrolment.
Withdrawal after enrolment
Students who receive a PhD scholarship and withdraw from the program are not entitled to a refund of the PhD program fee, the regional tax, or the stamp duty paid at enrolment. They are also required to pay the second instalment of the program enrolment fee, amounting to €600.00.
Exemptions
Students with a recognized disability of 66% or more, and/or with recognized handicap status under Italian Law No. 104/1992, are exempt from paying the PhD course fee and the regional fee for the right to university study.
